COMMENCEMENT HONORS AT WINONA HIGH SCHOOL

Miss Gladys Winter Ranks Highest and Will Be Veladictorian and Rolland Wilson Comes Next and Will Be Salutatorian — Both Residents of Dakota Village— Interesting Announcement by Principal Webster Davis.

Gladys Winter with an average grade of 95.32 was today declared to be the valedictorian of the class of 1915 of the Winona High school and Holland Wilson with an average grade of 94.68 the salutatorian of the class, by Principal Webster Davis before a general assembly of the student body of the school.
The honor roll of this year's graduating class oj the High school consists of fourteen students who have performed the work of their High school career with an average grade ibove 90 per cent. This compares very favorably with the honor roll of last year's class, which contained the names of fifteen students out of a class of eighty while this year's class will have only about 60 members.
Mr. Davis congratulated the school, the faculty and those on the honor roll for the excellent record they had made after his announcement had been received by the student body.

Winner of First Honors

Gladys Winter, the valedictorian, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Winter of Dakota, Minn., her father being a fruit raiser. Misa Winter was born in 1897 and, although a student in Dakota, received most of her education in a little, rural, one-roomschool-hoese at Richmond, Minn. There she easily led her class and almost invariably carried off the reward of merit cards. She finished the later years of her grade schooling in Dakota, where she completed her work with high honors under Miss Cora Dickson, now Mrs. Frank Morrisey of Winona.
Miss Winter is a graduate of the literary course of the Winona High School having completed the subjects of that course with the exceptionally fine average of 95.32. Thruout her school career here she had done tplendid work and taken much interest and active.part in the different interests o£ the High school. She has been on the Radiograph staff and was editor in chief of a recent number. She also did splendid work as a member of the Junior Dramatic society a rear ago.

Second Honors Winner
Rolland Wilson, the salutatorion oi his class, is the son of Mr. and Mrs, C . E. Wilson, also of Dakota, Minn. Mr. Wilson was born in 1895, and as a student of Dakota, proved himself very competent in his school work, re ceiying very high marks. He completed his school work there in 1908 under Miss Agnes Hatch, four years before he took up his High school ionrse in Winona. C- B. Wilson, his father, is a physician and surgeon at Dakota. Mr. Wilson will be a graduate of .he classical course of the High school with an average grade of 94.68. Mr. Wilson has proved himself a consistent and excellent student all thru his school career and he has also taken an active interest in the affaiTs of Sis class and school. Conddentally, both Miss Winter and Mr Wilson, both residents of Dakota, started school at the same time and will complete their preparatory school work together with very high grades, the highest of their class, a worthy showing. An interesting feature of the honor roll which those people lead, is the fact that half of its members are boys and half are girls.

Dr. Rolland Harvey Wilson. 78. who retired from medical practice in Winona in 1965, died at 5:10 a.m. today at Commu-nity Memorial Hospital. He had been ill 10 years.
He located in Winona in July 1929, was appointed Winona County Physician in 1932, serving in that capacity about 15 years, and was elected city health officer in 1950.
He was a member of the Harmony, Minn., Greenfield Ma-sonic Lodge A.F. & A.M.: Winona Scottish Rite Bodies: Osman Temple of the Shrine St. Paul; a life member of the Winona County Historical Society, honorary member of the American Medical Association and the Minnesota State Medical Society of which he was past president, and served on the Minnesota State Welfare Committee about 20 years and was a member of the Winona County Medical So-ciety. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and had served as senior warden and vestryman.
The son of Dr. Clarence E. and Etna Harvey Wilson. be was born at Dakota, Minn., April 30, 1895. He attended Dakota schools, was a 1915 graduate of Winona Public Schools, attended Hamline University. St. Paul, two years and received the degree of medical doctor from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1923. He served in the Army Medical Corps in World War I. On Sept.17, 1921, be married Hildred Thurow at Winona.
Dr. Wilson practiced in Harmony, Minn., six years. then was at Swedish Hospital, Minneapolis, where he did post graduate work in surgery prior to locating in Winona.
Survivors are: his wife; three sons, Dr. Louis Wilson, Rushford, Minn.; David D. Wilson, Waukesha, Wis, and Rolland H. Wilson, Jr., Minneapolis: eight grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Alice) Smith, Winona, and Mrs. Wilfred (Sylvia) Quinlivan, Lakewood, Col.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Rev. A.S. Lawrence, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Fawcett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial is being arranged.

Winona Girl Is Married Here Today

Miss Hildred Thurow Becomes Bride of Holland Harvey Wilson of Minneapolis, Formerly of Dakota.

A PRETTY wedding was solemnized this afternoon at 3 30 • o'clock at the home of Mr -and Mrs. Louis Thurow when their daughter, Hildred, became the bride of Rolland Harvey Wilson of Minneapolis. The ceremony was performed before an improvised altar of ferns and tall baskets of gladioli, the Rev. George S. Keller, rector of St. Paul's church, officiating.

Miss Gertrude Thurow of Minneapolis, a sister of the bride, acted as maid of honor. Benjamine B. Souster of St Paul, a fraternity brother of Mr. Wilson, was best man. Little Audrey Thurow, niece of the bride, was flower girl, and carried a basket of Ophelia roses.

Mendelssohn's wedding march was played by Miss Izetta Werner, while the bridal party took their places at the altar. The bride wore a gown of cream point lace over cream satin and carried a shower bouquet.

Following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was served to 35 immediate relatives and friends.

The bride is a graduate of Winona Teachers college and for the past two years has taught in the Winona public schools.

Mr. Wilson is the son of Dr and Mrs. C E Wilson of Dakota, Minn, and is a junior in the medical college o£ the University of Minnesota. He is a member of Phi Beta Pi fraternity.

Out-of-town guests included Dr and Mrs. C E Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wilson, Miss Sylvia Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Smith, all of Dakota, Benjamin B Souster of St Paul, Josh Armstrong of Minneapolis, and Miss Gertrude Thurow o! Minneapolis.

Mr' and Mrs Wilson will spend the remainder of the month in the North and after November 1 will be at home at the Elmherst apartments, Minneapolis.

Requiem Mass for Joseph John Vitosky, 65, of Dallas, a retired café owner and operator, will be celebrated Wednesday in St. Edward's Catholic Church, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John P. Brady as celebrant. Rosary was recited Tuesday. Burial will be in Calvary Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Vitosky died unexpectedly Monday in Valliant, OK, while on a fishing trip. A native of Alma, Ellis County, he had been a bank employee in Kaufman County before coming to
Dallas 35 years ago.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Miloty Wilson of Winona, MN, and Mrs. Betty Sneed of Dallas; his mother, Mrs. Frances Anna Vitosky of Dallas; three sisters, Mrs.
Mary Kopcek, Mrs. Rose Bozek and Mrs. Millie Nunally of Dallas; four brothers, William, Roger, Edward, and Frank Vitosky of Dallas, and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be George Hamilton, Alfred Zapp, B. J. Sebastian, Tommy Collum, Lonnie Collum, and Johnnie Frith.

Clarence E. Wilson, M. D., a physician and surgeon of Dakota Village, was born in New Hartford township, this county, November 2!, 1860, son of James G. and Sarah (Brown) Wilson. After receiving his preliminary education in the public schools, he entered the Chicago Independent Medical College from which he graduated in 1896. Since his graduation he has kept abreast of the latest developments in therapeutics and pathology by taking post-graduate courses in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905 and 1910. After his completion of his course, Dr. Wilson opened an office in Dakota where he has since successfully continued in practice. Aside from attending to his medical practice, Dr. Wilson has been more or less identified with the agricultural interests of the county, and at one time owned a good farm. Dr. Wilson belongs to Pickwick Lodge, No. 110, A. F. and A. M., and to the Modern Woodmen of America, at Dakota. Dr. Wilson was married May 19, 1884, to Edna Harvey, who was born in Winona county, July 15, 1866, daughter of Fletcher and Rachael Harvey. Dr and Mrs. Wilson have six children, five of whom are still living. They are: Sibyl (deceased), Vida, Alice, Claude, Rolland and Sylbia. Vida is now Mrs. Daniel Luther, of La Crescent,.Minn., and has two children. Alice is now Mrs. Earle Smith, of Dakota village, and has three children. Rolland attends the Winona high school.

Louis H. Thurow, extensive box manufacturer, was born in Pomerania, Germany, September 14, 1860, son of William and Wilhelmina (Voght) Thurow. He received a good education in the old country and learned his trade as a cabinetmaker. At the age of eighteen he came to Winona from Germany, and secured work in a flour mill for several years. Then he entered the employ of the Bohn Manufacturing Co., and remained in its employ for twenty-seven years. In 1907 he started a box manufacturing plant at 625 West Tenth Street. The business grew immediately, and is now one of Winona's large industries. The present shops are located on West Third street, at the corner of Wilson. Mr. Thurow is the sole owner and proprietor. He manufactures wooden boxes, box "shocks," crates, beer and soda cases, window and door frames, poultry coops and the like. Mr. Thurow is a member of the Dryads and of the Eureka Club. The subject of this sketch was married in May, 1885, to Emma Staack, daughter of M. Staack. Mr. and Mrs. Thurow have seven children: Herbert, Otto, William, Clara, Laura. Gertrude and Hildred. William Thurow died in Germany, in 1870, at the age of forty-six years. His wife Wilhelmina died in Germany, in 1911, at the age of sixty-eight. Louis H. was the only one of the family who came to America.

A new manufacturing industry is now being started in Winona on a small scale with every prospect that it will grow to much larger proportions. The gentlemen back of the enterprise are L. Thurow and Arthur J. Smith, and the article which they have started to make is the Eureka mop wringer. The device is a practical one and has already found much favor with those who have given it a trial. It is the invention of Mr. Thurow. The first machine was made in WInona about four months ago.
The many good points of the device and the favor with which it has been received have encouraged Messsrs. Thurow and Smith to engage in its manufacture. Up to the present time they have had the machine made at some of the woodworking plants in the city, but now they have decided to engage in its manufacture themselves, and have accordingly proceeded to the erection and equipment of a small factory budiling and expect to begin making the mop wringers in a about a week or two. The factory builing is located on West Howard street and is a frame structure 20 by 35 feet in size and two stories high. The manufacturing business will be carried on on the ground floor and the second floor will be used for storage. An electric motor will furnish the desired power.
There are already fifty of these machines in use in WInona and these are creating a demand for more. At the courthouse and the Winona they are in use. A few shipments have been made outside the city. Withe the completion and equipment of the factory building an endeavor will be made to push the sale of the machines, and it is expected the business will grow very considerably in the near future.
The Eureka mop wringer is buildt and designed for speed, durability, service and strength. With it a a wonderful pressure is produced with only light leverage power aided by four rollers. Large rollers spread the mop and small rollers regulate the speed. The machine is being made in three different sizes, ten inch for flat or residnece use, twelve inch a medium size for general work, and the large fourteen inch for all around work. The movement of the mop thru the rollers is produced by turning a small crank, doing away with the use of both feet and also the strain of the back. The two main rollers of the wringer are of hardwood. The first or feed roller is deeply corregated as to more easily raise the mop thru the rollers. Both rollers are deeply grooved on each side crossways so to prevent the water from flowing over the edges of the pail. The pail may be quickly changed or emptied without moving any part of the wringer.

A manufacturing industry which has been started on a small scale but for which there appears to be a large field if the encouragement of home patronage is bestowed is being carried on by Louis Thurow at 625 West Howard street. Mr. Thorow has engaged in the manufacture of boxes. He has since the winter been associated wtih A.J. Smith in the making of patent mop wringers, and now the box making will be carried on at the same place, but it is expected to enlarge the industry considerably.
While Mr. Thurow has been interested in this business for some little time the work has been done by Charles Beeman, but now Mr. Thorow has resigned his poisition with the Empire Lumber company and is giving his whole time to this work. At present Mr. Beeman is not there owing to an injury he recently received to one of his fingers, but when he has recovered from this he will return.
The box factory is now at work on a large order received from the Interestate Packing company for crates for its products. The demand for these creates will be more or less permanent and will alone give quite a little business to the factory. THre are many other manufacturing institutions here which use a good many boxes in the shipment of their product and Mr. Thurow proposed to docnuct his buisness in such a way as to merit and receive this patronage.
The quarters at present occupied on West Howard street are a two story barn. The lower floor of this has been fitted up into a workshop, and the upper floor is used for storage. For the present it is large enough to meet needs, but if the business grows enlarged quarters will be provided as necessary. Mr. Thorow, who has carefully looked over the ground, figures that there is plenty of business in this line in Winona to give steady employment to at least eight hands and he hopes to work up to the point where this number will be engaged.
Meanwhile the manufacture of the mop wringers will not be abandoned. An extended writeup of these wringers and their particular merits was given in these columns last spring. There are quite a number of these wringers now in use in Winona and they have received the hearty endorsement of those using them. As their merits become better known outside the city the demand for them is expected to increase. As yet they have been but little represented on the road. But by pushing their sale the number to be made could be increased quite materially
Many a large manufacturing institution has grown from such a small beginning as this and Winona desires to encourage small as well as large manufacturing institutions.

Mrs. Louis Thurow Dies at Age of 82

Mrs. Louis H. Thurow, 81, 101 Harriet street, died at 1:45 a. m. today at her home after an illness of about a year. She had been more seriously ill the past few days. Formerly Miss Emma Staack, daughter of Mathias and Mary (Petersen) Staack she wus born in Winona December 23, 1859, and lived here all her life. She was a member of the First Congregational church, Winona Chapter No. 141, Order of the Eastern Star, and Winona County Old Settlers Association. She took much interest, in needlework. Mr. and Mrs. Thurow observed their 68th wedding anniversary May 24, 1941. Survivors are her husband; three sons, Herbert, Winona; Otto, Fresno, Calif., and William J., Winona; four daughters, Mrs. D. W. Hiestand (Clara), Fairhope, Ala.; Mrs. J. A. Phillips (Laura), Winona; Gertrude, Beverly Hills, Calif., and Mrs. R. H. Wilson (Hildred), Winona; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Welty, Winona, and Mrs. Mathilda Lindow, Berkeley, Calif., and two brothers, Richard Staack, Sioux City, Iowa, and Edward Staack, Chicago. Notes:

The following obituary indicates that Larry Grych was born in Vienna, Austira. His second wife's naturalization papers, however, indicate that Larry was born in Hrabin, Poland. This may be a variation of Polish spelling for Grabin, or Grabinny so we are sticking with Grabinny as his birthplace so far.

These same naturalization papers also indicate that Larry entered the country in New York on May 5, 1881, but we have not yet been able to find a passenger manifest in 1881 showing him as a passenger.

After migrating to Bremond, Robertson County, Texas, where there was a considerable settlement of Polish immigrants and specifically some from the Grych family, Larry did move to Ennis, Texas, and he initially took a job with the railroad there. He apparently lost his leg in a railroad accident and then started his cafe in Ennis.

Larry Grych, 92, Dies Today In Dallas

Larry Grych, 92, who had been residing in Dallas for the past seven years with a daughter, Mrs. Flora Brown, died at 1 a.m. today in a Dallas hospital after a long illness.
Grych was born June 22, 1867 in Vienna Austria and came to the U.S.A. at the age of 14 settling in New York. He moved to Bremond when he was 16 years old and started working for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
At the age of 18 he moved to Ennis and lived here until seven years ago when he moved to Dallas. He was a charter member of the BofRT.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joe Vitovsky, Mrs. Brown and Miss Leona Grych, all of Dallas; one stepdaughter, Miss Agnes Grych currently of Paris, France: one stepson, Frank Grych of Chicago; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, one half-brother, Henry Borek of Midland; one half-sister, Mrs. Kate Borkouek of Bremond; a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 p.m. in the Bunch/Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Jon's Catholic Church with interment in St. Joseph's cemetery.
