    Notes:

    RUBY I. RICE, 88, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, April 27, 2012 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Center in Sedan, Kansas. Born on February 11, 1924 in Sitka, Kansas, she was the daughter of Raymond and Estella (Fox) Crane.

    She was raised and received her early education in Sitka and later Ashland, Kansas where she graduated from Ashland High School in 1942. She worked at the Ashcraft Pharmacy in Ashland during high school. She was united in marriage to Glen Rice on January 4, 1946 in Pratt, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Ashland. They later moved to rural Dexter, Kansas where the couple ranched. Ruby was a dedicated homemaker. They resided in Cedar Vale, Kansas until 1964 when they moved to Winfield.
    Mr. Rice preceded her in death in February of 1995. Ruby resided at the Dexter Care Center until its closing when she moved to the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center. She was a member of the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild and enjoyed teaching stained glass. Ruby was an avid walker and like to cook, quilt and all kinds of handiwork.

    Her family includes: Her son-in-law: Mike Young of Cedar Vale, KS; Her brother: Hubert Crane of Ashland, KS; Her sisters: Anna Mae Webb of Ashland, KS; and Shirley Cox and husband Donald of Ashland, KS; Her grandchildren: Lorri Pontious and husband John, and Michael Young; and her 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sydnia Young; her brothers, Charles, Glenn, Cedric and Donald; and her sisters, Mildred Grimes and Daisy McIntyre.

    Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M, Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Ozro Cemetery east of Cedar Vale. A memorial has been established in Rubys name for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Coffeyville. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

    Ruby married Glenn Rice on 4 Jan 1946 in Pratt, Pratt County, Kansas, USA. Glenn died in Feb 1955. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Raymond Leslie Crane, 69, died Monday morning in the Ashland Hospital. He had been in failing health for 3 years. He was born October 8, 1891 at Terre Haute, IN, and married Estella Viola Fox April 5, 1914, near Ashland. He farmed near Sitka for some time, later drove a school bus and moved to Ashland in 1957.

    Survivors are the widow of the home; 4 sons, Hubert and Cedric, both of Derby; Donald of Ashland; Charles Raymond of Anaheim, CA; 5 daughters, Mrs. R.B. Webb, Ashland; Mrs. Victor McIntyre, Albuquerque, NM; Mrs. R.B. Grimes, Houghton; Mrs. Glenn Rice, Cedarville; Mrs. Donald Cox, Beaver, OK; a brother Virgil, Ashland; brother Cedric, Des Plains, IL; brother Carl, Downers Grove, IL; a sister, Mrs. Lillie Strong, Scottsdale, AZ; 20 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

    Benjamin Crane was born July 18, 1864, joined the ME church in boyhood. Was married in the spring of 1886 (4/4/1886 per Vermillion County marrriage records, and her name was spelled Ammerman) to Anna Amerman, who deceased February 14, 1901. To this union was born seven children, Homer, Lyle, Raymond, Lillie, John, Carl and Sedric. He was remarried February 27, 1902 (2/22/1902 per Vermillion County marriage records) to Dollie Harrington, to them one child, Velma was born.

    Benjamin Crane leaves three brothers, three sisters, his father, a wife, and eight children, seven of them are alone in this world. He said "leaving my family is the only hard thing, but then my neighbors are all good, and the Lord is good, and He, through my neighbors, will provide good homes. Dying is easy, I feel a personal presence is helping me. My way is clear, I am satisfied to die."

    On the afternoon of December 28, the earthly home of this tabernacle was dissolved, and his spirit returned to the God who gave it.

    The funeral was preached at his home at 2 pm Tuesday by Rev W.A. Mathews to a large congregation. Text: _____ the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is ______" He is buried at Helt's Prairie Cemetery.

    At the home of the Bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Harrington, last Saturday at 4 p.m. was solemnized the marriage of their daughter Dollie to Benji Crane of near Center, Reverend Dunlavy of Dana officiating. The bride is the fourth daughter of William Harrington and is well and favorably known around here. The groom is an honest and industrious citizen of middle age. He has a nice home and we wish them a life of happiness.

    Notes:

    Born 10 JUL 1829 in Burke, Caledonia Co., VT. Came at the age of about 12 by way of the Erie Canal and overland to Vermilion Co., IL with his brother HARVEY CRANE and other members of his family. There he spent his youth and then moved to Vermillion Co., IN where he married MARIAM E. CRANE on 14 AUG 1851 Vermillion Co., IN and raised 8 children. When his wife died in 1885, he never remarried.

    After the death of his wife, he sold his land in Indiana and moved to Kansas. He returned to Indiana until his son HARVEY decided to move to Texas in 1908. There he resided until his death.

    He was a very active member of the Center Methodist Episcopal Church in Indiana. He taught Sunday School for many years and was a chorister. He felt it was his calling to serve the Lord, reading from the Bible daily.
