    Notes:

Aaron Guynup was part of the large Guynup family of Clinton County, New York. His great grandfather, William Guynnup, a Massachusetts Revolutionary War Veteran, settled in Beekmantown about 1800. His parents moved to Saranac late 1830s where Aaron grew up on a handsome farm.

Eager for adventure, he wanted to follow older brothers and cousins into the Civil War, but his mother held him back so long as she could. He enlisted as a private in the New York 26th Cavalry Regiment in Plattsburg, New York at age 19 in January 1865, and was mustered out in July 1865. He was terribly disappointed that his regiment served in Clinton County.

Two weeks after discharge he was married to Charlotte Maria Hare. They immediately purchased land from his parents, but soon sold it to his brother Andrew, and moved briefly to nearby Franklin County. Still eager for adventure, moved west to Jackson County, Michigan by 1871, where they remained for more than 10 years. Next stop was Butler County, Kansas, then on to El Reno, Canadian County, Oklahoma Territory for the first land rush in 1889.

As soon as their claim was proved, still struck with western fever, they moved to Oregon's Willamette Valley -- which looked amazingly like Clinton County, New York, with milder weather.
