The Submission
by Amy Waldman, 2011, Farrer, Straus, and Giroux, New York
This is a novel about the selection of a design for a memorial garden in New York for 9-11.
The selection process is anonymous and the novel creates an interesting scenario when the selection jury discovers, after they have made the selection, that the anonymous submitter is a Muslim.
The book is very well written and caused me to think, “Could this really happen?” With a little bit of the stretch of the imagination, maybe it could.
For some reason, the book never really grabbed me. Maybe it was that all the characters seemed to be a bit of a turnoff to me; maybe it was that the plot hinged on the 911 disaster which is still a quite sensitive subject for me. At any rate, I wish I could have enjoyed it a bit more.
